Ubisoft, the renowned game producer behind the Assassin’s Creed series, is currently developing a tactical role-playing game (RPG) for PC built on the Oasys blockchain.
Ubisoft shocked the gaming world at the end of 2021 when it revealed plans to release limited edition NFTs on the Tezos blockchain for the PC version of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. This event is considered the most significant integration of NFTs into a traditional gaming market title to date. At that time, Ubisoft faced numerous complaints from players. Many gamers were skeptical about NFTs due to factors such as speculation in digital assets, fraud within the NFT space, and concerns that publishers would use NFTs to extract additional money from players.
Despite the backlash, Ubisoft has continued to strengthen its partnerships with various companies in the blockchain gaming sector and remains committed to building in the Web3 world. This includes the recent release of Rabbids characters in The Sandbox.
Back in 2020, Ubisoft released an NFT-themed experiment to benefit UNICEF, followed by the launch of One Shot League in 2021, a spin-off of the fantasy soccer game Sorare on Ethereum.
Ubisoft is one of the first major traditional game publishers to adopt blockchain technology, having done so for several years. Despite facing harsh reactions from gamers towards blockchain games since 2022, the studio has continued to advance into the Web3 space with a renewed vision. Recently, they unveiled a new Web3 game.
Introduction to Champions Tactics
Champions Tactics is an NFT-based tactical role-playing game (RPG) with player-versus-player (PvP) mechanics, first announced at the end of June 2023.
The game is designed with a dark fantasy gothic theme, blending elements of darkness, horror, and medieval aesthetics. The characters in the game are warrior statues, providing a fresh and unique experience for players.
Developed for the PC platform, Champions Tactics is structured as a tactical combat game between two sides, allowing players to develop various strategies to battle their opponents.
“Gather a team of mythical Champions to engage in thrilling battles against other players and explore the legends of the dark world of Grimoria,” describes the Champions Tactics game project.
Champions Tactics will be Ubisoft’s first game built on Oasys, a blockchain network focused on gaming that has garnered interest from other gaming giants such as Square Enix, Sega, and Bandai Namco. Last fall, game developer DoubleJump.Tokyo announced that they were developing a game on Oasys based on Sega’s Japanese game Sangokushi Taisen.
Gameplay
As a PvP combat game, each round requires players to choose three champions to represent them in battles against opponents.
There will be a total of 7 different champion classes, such as warriors, assassins, mages, etc. Each class will have its own strengths and weaknesses, complementing each other when combined into a team.
The strengths of certain champions will compensate for the weaknesses of others. For example, you can place tanky warriors with high health in the front row to shield weaker champions like assassins, allowing them to deal damage safely.
Additionally, you can create special champions with unique and distinctive skills to battle other players, climb the leaderboard, and receive valuable rewards from the game.
NFTs in the Game
The game will feature its first NFT collection called “The Warlords.” These are PFP (Profile Picture) NFTs that come with features such as granting holders early access to the game.
Holders of these NFTs will be granted early access to the game, allowing them to acquire champions for free (up to a maximum of 5 champions).
There will be a total of 9,999 Warlord NFTs, with 8,000 NFTs available for minting and 1,000 NFTs allocated to the Oasys community. The remaining 999 NFTs will be retained by Ubisoft for marketing purposes and future giveaways to users.
